14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 4, 2010

Luke 10:1-2, 17-20: Jesus sent forth seventy-two disciples to preach his good news, telling them “the harvest is rich, but the workers few.”  He also gave them detailed instructions on how to act towards the people.  Jesus then reminded them not to be happy because of their power over evil, but to rejoice in the salvation they would achieve.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

Stewardship Sharing

“Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals….”

(Luke 10:4a)

This was Jesus’ simple command to all of us at the end of the Good Samaritan story.  How do we do “likewise?” By taking the time to help when we are needed.  By sharing our skills.  By reaching into our pockets when financial help is needed.  In short, by being a good steward.

LITURGICAL/WORSHIP

A PRAYER FOR HEALING IN THE CHURCH

Holy Spirit, comforter, advocate, and guide,

inspire a new springtime of holiness and

 apostolic zeal for the Church.

May our sorrow and our tears,

our sincere effort to redress past wrongs,

and our firm purpose of amendment

bear an abundant harvest of grace

for the deepening of the faith

in our families, parishes, schools, and

communities,

for the spiritual progress of society,

and the growth of charity, justice, joy and

peace within the whole human family.

To you, Holy Trinity,

confident in the loving protection of Mary

and all the saints,

do we entrust ourselves, our children,

and the needs of the Church in the world.

Amen.

PRAYER OF INDEPENDENCE DAY

God, Father and Creator,

We thank you for the land we live in, not because it is perfect, but because it is ours, ours to make of it what we will.  Here, we have our homes; here we share life with those we love.  There can be no more compelling reason on earth for offering thanks and praise to you.  There is no better way of expressing our thanks than by sharing the gift of freedom with other people who are our brothers and sisters.  Help us, Father, to live out this belief.  We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who has promised to remain with us until all things come into fulfillment.

Scriptural reading: John 8:31-36

COMMUNITY NEWS

CONGRATULATIONS…

To Mike Messick in being named the first umpire volunteer of the year.  Mike has spent many hours volunteering in the community and parish building community among children and families.  Mike will be honored at the Little League Series in Williamsport, PA in August.

Also, thanks to all of you who volunteer in the community in various ways.  Simply a way of building a church without walls and a community without borders.

VBS

Community Vacation Bible School will take place the first week in August.  Monday, August 2nd thru Friday, August 6th.  VBS begins everyday at 9 am and concludes at 12:30 pm.  VBS is free.  Please consult the flyer for food and craft products for donation.  This keeps the cost down and the program free to participating families.

YMCA POT LUCK LUNCHEON

Date:       Tuesday, July 20th

Time:       12:30 pm Lunch, program to follow

Location:  YMCA of Salem County Auditorium

What to bring:   Your Favorite Dish

All seniors are welcomed to this friendly, monthly social event.  This Tuesday, following lunch, Fox Rehabilitation presents “Live Long Be Strong with the Power of Exercise!”  Enjoy the company and conversation of others, while sharing good food and drink!  Also receive a FREE health screening.

 OUTREACH

FOOD COLLECTION BOX

Canned meats, tuna fish, pasta with meat sauce are the current needs for Catholic Charities and Visiting Nurses.

Cornerstone needs diapers size 3 or larger, baby food and gently used baby clothing.

Please consider making a donation, which may be placed in the food collection box at the entrance of the church.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Once again Town and Country Realty will be supporting our local schools with a school supply drive.  They distribute bags with a list of requested supplies to residents in Woodstown and then go back to collect the donated items.  They will be distributing bags on August 14 starting at 7:30 am and need volunteers to help with the distribution of the bags.  I know it is early but just think it won’t be too hot and you will get your exercise in for the day.

This is a great chance for the entire family to get out and spend time together while supporting the community!  Please call Teresa Christoff at 935-2538 if you are able to help with this effort.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

The gospel today is clear: Peace comes to a “household if a peaceful person lives there.”  Peace starts with your ability to forgive, to correct without attacking, to accept the ways of others and to recognize a different opinion is not a personal rejection.  It is actually your own peace which you give to your family.

COMMUNITY ACTION

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

United Way of Salem County worked with the John Fenwick School this year on a Read Aloud program and we hope to increase our involvement this upcoming school year.  The Read Aloud program will continue and we are asking our volunteers to consider taking their contact with the school to the next level.  You may chose to set your schedule to read to the same class group every month, “adopt” a class or child for special activities, or volunteer to make a special presentation to the students.  Many times the students do not have an adult who is able to attend special activities such as Grandparents Day, Danishes with Dad or Muffins with Mom.  This would give you the chance to make a child feel extra special when you step in to be a “substitute” for them. If you have questions or would like to volunteer please call Teresa Christoff at 935-2538.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

WITHOUT BORDERS, WITHOUT FLAGS

Where do you come from, where are you going?

I come from all places, I have no name.

I know pain and hunger.

I seek land, home, food,

Life!

Where do you come from, where are you going?

I come from the underground,

Forgotten and dark, fetid and filthy.

I seek dignity and peace, the light of day,

Citizenship!

Where do you come from, where are you going?

I come from the drainage ditch and from abandonment,

I know nostalgia and I lose hope,

I seek gestures of friendship,

Solidarity!

Where do you come from, where are you going?

I come from far and wide:

Black, yellow, white, indigenous.

I am your “other,” different,

I am a person!

Where do you come from, where are you going?

I come from discrimination,

From prejudice.

I know walls, laws, fears, loneliness,

I want a world without borders

or flags!

Where do you come from, where are you going?

I come from the resistance, from the struggle.

From a situation of senselessness,

Valiant and intrepid in the voyage.

Of life I make rhyme and satire

On the way to the Great Homeland!

-Fr. Alfredo Jose Goncalves

REFLECTION

Solidarity can be imagined as a shared walk, accompanying another in reaching a difficult destination.  For the non-poor, a relationship of mutuality, receptivity, and common cause with people who live in poverty can require a complete change in perspective, as the second story suggests.  Reflect on the question “Where do I come from and where am I going?” in your call to solidarity with the poor.
